Frequently Asked Questions

What does NOS mean when buying vacuum tubes?
NOS stands for “New Old Stock” — original vintage vacuum tubes manufactured decades ago by legendary makers like Mullard, Telefunken, Amperex, RCA, and Western Electric, but never used. NOS tubes were built when manufacturing tolerances, materials quality, and quality control were significantly higher than modern production. They typically deliver superior tone, longer service life, and lower noise than current-production equivalents.
Are NOS tubes really better than new production tubes?
In most cases, yes — particularly for audio applications. NOS tubes were manufactured during the golden era of tube production (roughly 1940s-1990s) when factories used purer materials, more refined cathode coatings, and tighter quality standards than current production allows. Many audiophiles and guitar players report NOS tubes deliver richer harmonics, better dynamics, lower microphonics, and noticeably longer service life than new tubes.
How do you test vacuum tubes before shipping?
Every tube we sell is tested on professional calibrated equipment for transconductance (Gm), emission, gas content, shorts, and leakage. We also perform free noise and microphonics screening on every order — a service most retailers charge extra for. Tubes that don’t meet our standards never get listed for sale, period.
What’s the difference between Mullard, Telefunken, and Amperex tubes?
Mullard tubes (made in Britain) are known for warm, lush midrange and smooth top end — favored for vocals and tube guitar amps. Telefunken tubes (made in Germany) are prized for clarity, detail, and tight bass, often considered the gold standard for hi-fi preamps. Amperex tubes (made in Holland and the U.S.) sit between the two, offering excellent dynamics and a slightly warmer tonal balance than Telefunken with more articulation than Mullard.
What is microphonics and why does it matter?
Microphonics is when a tube picks up mechanical vibration and converts it into an audible signal — usually as ringing, chiming, or amplified noise when the tube is tapped or vibrated. Microphonic tubes are especially problematic in preamp positions and high-gain guitar amps.
How do I know which vacuum tube I need for my amplifier?
The most reliable method is checking your amplifier’s tube chart, owner’s manual, or the back panel where tube types are usually printed. Common preamp tubes include 12AX7, 12AT7, and 12AU7; common power tubes include EL34, 6L6, KT88, and 6V6. If you’re still unsure, contact us with your amplifier make and model and we’ll point you to the correct tube types.
Do NOS tubes have an expiration date or shelf life?
Properly stored NOS tubes do not expire. We’ve sold tubes manufactured in the 1930s and beyond that test as strong as the day they were made. The tube only begins its service life when power is applied — so a 60-year-old NOS tube sitting in original packaging is functionally the same as one made yesterday.
Why do NOS tubes cost more than new production tubes?
NOS tubes are a finite, non-renewable resource — no one is making new Mullard ECC83s or Telefunken smooth-plates anymore. The original factories closed decades ago, supply continues to shrink, and demand from audiophiles and musicians keeps growing. The price reflects rarity, superior performance, and the cost of sourcing, testing, and authenticating genuine vintage tubes.
Is there a minimum order amount?
Yes — we have a $50 minimum product order. This allows us to maintain professional testing standards, careful packing, and the level of personal service our customers expect.
How are tubes packaged for shipping?
Every tube is professionally packed for safe arrival. Tubes are individually wrapped, padded, and secured inside double-walled boxes designed specifically to prevent vibration and impact damage during transit. We’ve shipped vacuum tubes worldwide for over two decades — proper packing is non-negotiable.
Do you ship vacuum tubes internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide. International orders are professionally packed to the same standard as domestic orders. Customs duties, taxes, and import fees are the responsibility of the buyer and vary by destination country.
How can I tell if a vacuum tube is genuine and not a relabel?
Genuine NOS tubes can be authenticated through factory codes etched into the glass, plate structure, getter shape and position, and original branding fonts. Many “NOS” tubes sold online are actually relabeled current production or used pulls. Every tube we sell has been authenticated based on 45+ years of hands-on tube experience and verified factory markings.
What’s the difference between matched and unmatched tubes?
Matched tubes are pairs or quads tested to have closely similar transconductance and plate current values, which is critical for push-pull power amplifiers to operate efficiently and avoid premature wear. Unmatched tubes work fine in single-ended circuits and most preamp positions. If your amp has multiple power tubes operating in push-pull, you’ll want a matched set.
Do you offer warranty on NOS tubes?
Yes — every tube ships with a 30-day rock solid warranty. We test every tube before shipment to ensure world-class performance, and we stand behind every order.
